Most of our class meetings will take place in Virtual Park Hall, a MOO. You can get to VPH through any of the following methods:
If you are using your own machine for this class and have an ISP account, you can download and install special software that will make using the course MOO much easier. Each of these "client" programs will have its own procedures, but generally they involve establishing your normal Internet connection and then launching the client program "on top" of it.
There are three main download sites for MOO clients:
Follow the instructions specific to your client to install and log-in. The address of Virtual Park Hall is: virtual.park.uga.edu 7777. You will need to enter this information into your particular MOO client once you install it on your machine.
Once you make the connection, type the following:
connect [username] [password]where [username] is your individual user name and [password] is your personal password. This will place you in the Foyer of Virtual Park Hall, where information on the location of classes will be posted. You are looking for Mr.Cole's Classroom.
If you do not have a computer with Internet access, you can access VPH via the the Web from many campus computers (to a list of campus computer labs). The MOO client is MUDSlide, which uses Java technology, so the computer must be running at least Netscape 3.0 or another Java-enabled browser. Click here to connect via the web.
Note that MUDSlide has a tendency to freeze up and thus is not a truly reliable means of connecting to our MOO. Use this connection only if you cannot install a MOO client on your own machine. The one advantage MUDSlide has over an ARCHES connection (detailed below) is that you can scroll back through the MOO session.
Begin by logging-in to your ARCHES account. At the initial menu, select:
[7] Other Services
When the new menu pops up, select:
[2] System Prompt
At this point the menu system will disappear and you will see nothing but a percent sign (%). Type the following, verbatim (including spacing) at the prompt:
telnet virtual.park.uga.edu 7777
Once you make the connection, type the following:
connect [username] [password]
where [username] is your individual user name and [password] is your personal password. This will place you in the Foyer of Virtual Park Hall, where information on the location of classes will be posted. You are looking for Mr.Cole's Classroom.
Note that you cannot scroll up in an ARCHES window. The drawback of connecting via ARCHES is that once info. scrolls out of your window, you cannot go back to look at it. Use an ARCHES connection only as a last resort.
