Mr.Cole says, "How's it going, folks?"
JulieOw says, "what is everyones audiendce, mine is students"
JenniferCa says, "everyone chose students"
GeraldLa says, "i agree"
KurtDa says, "I checked almost all of them, and all the ones I checked were students"
JulieOw says, "well it is the easiest"
GeraldLa says, "read note 9"
KurtDa says, "yep yep"
JenniferCa says, "me too..all students"
GeraldLa says, "sorry"
KurtDa says, "no problem"
Mr.Cole says, "Fair enough. It's a group you should be able to identify with, and who should identify with you."
KurtDa says, "I can difinately Identify with stundents"
KurtDa says, "students"
KurtDa says, "I'm all over the typos today"
JenniferCa says, "lucky its you and not me"
KurtDa says, "thanks, I appreciate that"
Mr.Cole says, "So, what do you want to tell students about technology?"
JenniferCa says, "you should"
JulieOw says, "that it is the future and they should understand it becuase we too are the furture"
KurtDa says, "That it is beneficial to the advancement of society, in fact, it is the epitome of advancement, and that if they don't like it, they need to deal with it"
JenniferCa says, "that they shouldn't fall into the depths of technology and become totally dependent on it"
KurtDa says, "that they need to find a 'happy medium", and use it to their advantage"
Mr.Cole says, "A couple different positions, great."
Mr.Cole says, "How do you reach students, get them to care about your topic?"
KurtDa says, "give them free stuff"
JenniferCa says, "make them think on your level"
Mr.Cole says, "assuming you don't have a promotions budget."
KurtDa says, "Explain your views and show them the logic behind your views"
JenniferCa says, "associate it to them"
JulieOw says, "explain to them that it is their future I am writing about, that SHOULD be enough."
KurtDa says, "Explain why it is good (or bad)."
KurtDa says, "Involve them in your speech, address them directly, and hope your breath doesn't smell to bad"
Mr.Cole says, "In a sense, all arguments seek to get someone else to 'think at your level'; a fancier way of terming this is 'establishing common ground.' You want to show people (students or otherwise) where your interests and theirs intersect

JenniferCa says, "haha..thats Kurt, always trying to be funny"
KurtDa says, "trying is the key word"
Mr.Cole says, "Julie has a good point about stressing the future. College students, being young and usually ambitious tend to be concerened about their futures, right?"
KurtDa says, "um....."
JulieOw says, "i do"
KurtDa says, "i don't know about that"
JenniferCa says, "most of then"
JenniferCa says, "them even"
KurtDa says, "but a lot of them also live in a 'carpe diem' lifestyle, thinking about where they are going to drink on Friday night"
Mr.Cole says, "But even for Jenny's anti-technological position (or at least skeptical position), you could use the same common ground, stressing instead the future _dangers_ of technology."
JenniferCa says, "i know im only here because its free and my parents pay for my car insurance as long as im in school"
KurtDa says, "ok"
KurtDa says, "my point is made"
Mr.Cole says, "OK, Kurt has a good point, too. The 20-something generation is reknowned for their apathy. How do you crack through that?"
JulieOw says, "very carefully"
KurtDa says, "um....I'm still working on that"
JenniferCa says, "you have to relate to the apathetic people, you cant be completely apathetic"
KurtDa says, "I'm trying to break through my apathy, let alone my entire audiences"
JenniferCa says, "i can relate to being apathetic"
KurtDa says, "you stick them in a english 101 online class"
Mr.Cole says, "I'm just guessing, but I imagine most of these 'carpe diem'/apathetic/I-don't-care-about-the-future types have some lingering guilt or anxiety about what happens after they graduate and mom and dad stop paying for everything. "
KurtDa says, "I don't think they're thinking that far ahead, that's four long years"
JulieOw laughs

Mr.Cole says, "Three and a hlaf and counting down, Kurt. :)"
Mr.Cole says, "um, half"
KurtDa says, "well, give or take a semester"
JenniferCa says, "what if their parent dont pay for everything"
Mr.Cole says, "True, I was generalizing."
KurtDa says, "I know what I'm doing, so it's all good, but not everyone is like that"
JenniferCa says, "i know what i want to do, but i cant predict the future"
KurtDa says, "I'm also paying for my college education, as opposed to my parents"
KurtDa says, "I can't afford to be apathetic"
GeraldLa says, "so now our audience is just apathetic college students who don't do anything but drink and live off of their parents"
JulieOw says, "me either Kurt"
JenniferCa says, "the lottery is paying for mine...my parents wouldnt afford me to go here"
KurtDa says, "Mr. Cole, are our papers not done because you had to watch southpark last night."
Mr.Cole says, "My point is, if you agree with my assessment, you could play on that anxiety, remind students that in a couple years they'll have to face the "real world" and if they are not prepared for it...."
KurtDa says, "oh yea"
KurtDa says, "good idea"
KurtDa says, "so youve been playing off that for years now haven't you"
Mr.Cole says, "I refuse to answer the question on the grounds that I might incriminate myself. :)"
KurtDa laughs.

JenniferCa says, "we should get special recognition for doing our work and watching south park"
JulieOw says, "be nice now our other papers aren't due til Tuesday"
JenniferCa says, "oh yeah"
Mr.Cole says, "anyway, I think this should give you some idea of how to incorporate your sense of audience into the planning of your essays. Think you can continue w/o me?"
JulieOw says, "we can mange"
KurtDa says, "sure, uless our apathy sets in"
Mr.Cole says, "hee hee"
JulieOw says, "manage"

KurtDa says, "my mom says to be a lesbian, you have to lick
carpet......--Cartman"
KurtDa says, "I've been licking this carpet fior three hours
and I still don't feel like a lesbian""
JenniferCa says, "is anyone going to the chem builiding today?"
KurtDa says, "no, why?"
KurtDa says, "I live right next to it"

JenniferCa says, "because my roomate needs to drop her class
and she wants me to go there today becasue shes out of town and i dont
feel like it"
KurtDa says, "I don't think I can pass as your roomate"
JenniferCa says, "it doesnt really matter"

KurtDa says, "they were due on Mon and TUes"
JenniferCa says, "her teacher is a dick...i dropped a class
yesterday"
JenniferCa says, "she didnt have a syllabus and didnt know she
had to go to the office"

KurtDa says, "Mr. Cole was right, you have to make them
realize that they only have so much time before they graduate and have to
stick it out on there own"
JulieOw says, "what does that have to do with tech"
KurtDa says, "I don't know"
JenniferCa says, "i dont think so,,,that wouldnt phase me at all"
KurtDa says, "but it might to some"
JenniferCa says, "it would to a lot....i guess"
KurtDa says, "you can't convince most apathetic students
anything, this just bvecame a much tougher audience"
JulieOw says, "yeah but I am still confused why that ties in
whith tech"
KurtDa says, "I dont' now, the weekend will be spent in a
drunken stupor, trying to figure that out"
JulieOw says, "sounds good to me"
KurtDa says, "I wish I knew how big the audience was, like 20
people or 200?"
